The air in the Whispering Caves was thick with an ancient stillness, a silence that pressed in on my ears, yet it was a different kind of quiet than the one I knew. This was a waiting silence, heavy with untold stories. Elder Hoot had guided me here, his soft wingbeats barely disturbing the dust motes dancing in the slivers of light that pierced the cavern’s gloom. He had spoken of a place where the heart of the forest beat, a place where echoes of forgotten power and profound truths resided. And I, Bristle, a boar who had always felt adrift in the boisterous, snuffling world of my herd, felt a tremor of something akin to understanding begin to stir within me.

“The artifact,” Elder Hoot’s voice was a murmur, like leaves rustling on a still evening, “it is not a weapon, young Bristle, as Bramble might seek it to be. It is a resonance. An echo of the forest’s first breath.”

I nudged a loose pebble with my snout, my heart thumping a nervous rhythm against my ribs. My herd. My mother. The shadowy presence that had begun to weave a chill through our familiar glades. The wind, my constant companion, had been more agitated lately, its whispers carrying a frantic edge. It spoke of a growing imbalance, of a hunger that sought to consume the very lifeblood of our home. And then, it had led me here, to this place, to this… echo.
