Chapter 6
The Whispering Caves
The air in the Whispering Caves was thick with the scent of damp earth and something else, something ancient and wild. It clung to my snout, tickled my whiskers, and settled deep in my lungs with every breath. My hooves, usually so sure on the forest floor, felt clumsy on the slick, uneven stone. Elder Hoot had said the caves were a place where the forest’s heart beat loudest, and that I needed to go there if I was to understand the whispers fully. He’d spoken of them with his usual quiet reverence, his great yellow eyes fixed on me as if he could see the very thoughts swirling inside my head.
"The wind carries its secrets everywhere, little Bristle," he'd murmured, his voice a low rustle of leaves. "But in places of deep silence, where the earth itself breathes, its voice is clearest. The caves, they are a place of ancient memory."
I shivered, though the air wasn’t particularly cold. It was the feeling of being *watched*, not by eyes, but by the very stones around me. The whispers, which had become a constant companion since I’d left the familiar, noisy comfort of my herd, were different here. They weren't just carried on the breeze; they seemed to emanate from the walls themselves, a soft, continuous hum that vibrated through my bones. It was like standing in the middle of a thousand hushed conversations, each one just beyond my grasp.
