Whispers of the Ancestors

The air thrummed with an ancient song, a melody woven from the sigh of wind over dunes and the murmur of forgotten rivers. Elara, her wide-brimmed hat casting a welcome shadow over her determined face, felt it deep within her bones. It was a familiar feeling, one that had grown stronger with each passing day, a subtle hum beneath the surface of her ordinary life. She sat by the edge of the oasis, its shimmering waters a stark contrast to the endless ochre expanse that stretched to the horizon. The water, usually a source of comfort, now seemed to mirror the unease that had settled over her village like a shroud. The sandstorm, a monstrous entity of swirling grit and fury, had receded for now, but its threat lingered, a dark promise whispered on the wind.

They spoke of a balance broken, a harmony disturbed. Elara focused, her breath steady, her mind reaching out to the unseen currents that flowed through the sand and stone. She felt them then, the desert spirits, their presence as real as the sun on her skin. They were like shimmering heat hazes, their forms indistinct, their voices like the rustle of dry leaves.

“They are troubled,” she murmured, her voice barely audible above the gentle lapping of the oasis water.
