Beneath the Crimson Moon
The sun, a molten coin, dipped below the jagged horizon, painting the sky in hues of bruised plum and fiery tangerine. Elara, her wide-brimmed hat casting a welcome shadow over her face, watched the spectacle with a familiar ache in her chest. The wind, usually a playful whisper through the dunes, coiled and hissed, carrying a scent of dust and unease. Tonight, the desert felt different, restless. The crimson moon, still a sliver in the deepening twilight, cast an eerie glow, turning the familiar sands into a landscape of shifting shadows.
She traced the worn leather of the pouch at her hip, the one that held the smooth, cool stones gifted to her by the spirits. They thrummed faintly against her skin, a silent echo of their presence. Since the sandstorm had threatened to swallow their village, the spirits had been more insistent, their voices a chorus of urgent whispers in the back of her mind. They spoke of a forgotten power, of a heart that beat beneath the sands, and of a coming darkness.
Her grandmother, the village elder, had found her by the oasis, her eyes wide with a wonder that bordered on fear. “The spirits are restless, child,” she’d said, her voice raspy like dry leaves. “They speak of you. Of a path only you can walk.”
