Chapter 10
Roma Land's True Wonder
Helene outsmarts Silas Vane. The Whispering Map reveals its true secrets, not of treasure, but of harmony and protection for Roma Land. Helene becomes its guardian, a celebrated hero.
The biting wind whipped Helene’s hair across her face as she scrambled up the final rocky incline. Below, the jagged peaks of Roma Land stretched out like the teeth of some slumbering giant, their snowy caps glinting under a sky the color of bruised plums. Professor Silas Vane was close, she could feel it, his shadow clinging to her like a second skin. But the summit was here, the place Orion had described, the place where the Whispering Map’s final secret lay hidden.
She reached the crest, her breath catching in her throat. It wasn’t a treasure chest, or a hidden alcove, or even a grand inscription that greeted her. Instead, the summit was a wide, flat expanse of ancient stone, worn smooth by millennia of wind and weather. In the center, etched into the very bedrock, was a swirling pattern that seemed to pulse with a faint, internal light. It looked less like a map and more like a… a heartbeat.
“So, you’ve finally arrived,” a voice rasped, chilling Helene to the bone. Professor Vane stood a few paces away, his dark cloak billowing around him like a storm cloud. His eyes, usually narrowed and calculating, now gleamed with a feverish triumph. “And just in time to witness my ultimate victory.”
