Chapter 7
The Red Run
Scarlet, still partially herself, flees from the Monster Sun's control. Mark and Denny, along with the rest of the Crayon Crew, chase after her, determined to save their friend from the monstrous form.
The air thrummed with a frantic energy, a stark contrast to the playful chaos that had just moments before filled this vibrant, impossible land. Scarlet, or what remained of her, a grotesque caricature of her former self, stumbled forward. Her crimson form flickered, embers of her true color fighting against the suffocating, sun-baked glow that now consumed her. It was a horrifying transformation, a perversion of her very essence, and the sight sent a shiver of dread down my spine. The Monster Sun’s laughter, a dry, rasping sound like sand scraping on glass, echoed behind her, a cruel taunt that fueled her desperate flight.
“Scarlet!” Denny’s voice, usually so full of booming cheer, was tight with panic. He was already moving, his own bright hues a beacon of determination against the encroaching heat. The rest of the Crayon Crew, a kaleidoscope of anxious faces, followed suit, their usual boisterous energy replaced by a grim resolve. This wasn't just a dream anymore; this was real, and Scarlet needed us.
We ran. The ground beneath our feet, once soft and yielding like a freshly drawn canvas, now felt hot and brittle. The landscape, moments ago alive with the playful structures of the Crayon Crew, seemed to twist and warp under the oppressive glare of the Monster Sun. Shadows, usually a comforting presence, were now stark and menacing, elongating and contorting like hungry claws. Every breath I took was thick with the scent of ozone and something acrid, like burnt sugar.
