A Mother's Gentle Call
Mark's mom calls him for bedtime. The portal vanishes as quickly as it appeared. He sits on his bed, the day's extraordinary events feeling like a vivid dream, as night settles over his home.
The shimmering portal, which had pulsed with an otherworldly light just moments before, now flickered like a dying ember. It was fading, shrinking, its edges fraying into the familiar wallpaper of my bedroom. A strange, melancholic ache settled in my chest. Was it all a dream? The vibrant colors, the boisterous laughter of the Crayon Crew, Denny’s infectious grin, even the terrifying glare of the Monster Sun – could it have been conjured from nothing but the dust motes dancing in the afternoon sun?
“Mark! Dinner’s getting cold!” My mom’s voice, warm and familiar, sliced through the surreal silence. It was a sound from my world, a world that suddenly felt miles away, even though I was still standing in the same spot.
I turned, my eyes still drawn to the dwindling vortex. It was no use. It was disappearing, taking with it the impossible reality I had just inhabited. The last vestiges of its glow seemed to coalesce, forming a single, bright spark before winking out entirely. The wall was just a wall again, displaying the same pattern of faded blue sailboats I’d seen a thousand times before.
