Chapter 14
The Door Back Home
The shimmering portal reappears, marking Mark's path back to his own world. He takes one last look at Vacaville, a place now forever etched in his memory, before stepping through to his room.
The air in Vacavile shimmered, not with the usual vibrant glow of creativity, but with a different, more wistful luminescence. It was a hesitant light, like a shy star peeking through the clouds, and I knew, with a pang that settled deep in my chest, what it meant. The portal. My way home. Denny and the Crayon Crew stood clustered around me, their faces a mixture of smiles and the same wistful sadness that was beginning to bloom inside me. Scarlet, her crimson hue brighter and more solid than ever, nudged my hand with her waxy head. She was no longer a sun-monster, no longer choked by heat and hate, but vibrantly, beautifully herself.

I nodded, unable to find my voice. The vibrant houses of Vacavile, painted in every shade imaginable, seemed to hum a silent farewell. The very air tasted of pure imagination, a scent I knew I’d forever be chasing. This place, this world born from a mark, from a simple wish to create, had given me more than just an adventure. It had given me courage. It had shown me that even the smallest of us, with a little bravery and a lot of heart, could stand up to the darkest of shadows.
