The forest floor, usually a damp carpet of fallen leaves and moss, began to shimmer. Not with dew, or the dappled sunlight filtering through the ancient canopy, but with an inner luminescence, as if the very earth pulsed with a gentle, golden light. Eleanor, her heart thrumming with a mixture of awe and apprehension, pulled Lila closer. The air itself felt different, thinner, carrying the scent of something wild and unknown, like star-dust and blooming nightshade.
"Eleanor, what is this place?" Lila whispered, her voice barely disturbing the sudden, profound stillness. Her hand, which had been resting on Eleanor's arm, now gripped it with a surprising firmness.
Eleanor consulted the atlas, its pages rustling with an almost impatient sigh. The map of the Whispering Peaks, the one with the peculiar inscription, seemed to glow now, the lines of its mountains and valleys pulsing with the same soft light as their surroundings. "I think," Eleanor began, her voice hushed, "I think the atlas is showing us more than just a place. It’s showing us… a way *through*."
