The air in Eleanor’s study grew thick, not with the dust of ages that usually clung to her beloved atlas, but with a palpable presence. It was a feeling of being watched, not with malice, but with an ancient, knowing gaze. Eleanor, who had been tracing the faded blue lines of a river on a map of Oceania, froze. The hairs on her arms prickled, and she instinctively clutched the worn leather cover of the atlas.
"You are not alone, child," a voice whispered, soft as falling leaves, yet resonating deep within her bones. It seemed to come from everywhere and nowhere at once. Eleanor’s heart hammered against her ribs. She scanned the room, her eyes darting from the shadowed corners to the windowpanes reflecting the late afternoon sun. No one.
"Who… who are you?" she managed, her voice barely a tremor.
