Yasmine's Instinct

Yasmine notices Monta acting jittery near the supply cache. She quietly reports to Chris. Monta's nervous glances toward the woods raise flags.

The morning light filtered through the gaps in the boarded-up windows of the old hardware store. Dust motes danced in the pale yellow beams, settling on shelves stripped of anything useful. Yasmine sat cross-legged near the back corner, a worn blanket spread beneath her. Monte and Marie were still asleep on their makeshift beds of flattened boxes and old coats, their breathing soft and even. She watched them for a moment, letting the quiet warmth of their safety settle in her chest before she stood.

Chris had taken the first watch. He leaned against the front counter, a crowbar resting across his knees. His eyes were heavy but alert, scanning the street beyond the cracked glass. Yasmine padded over and knelt beside him, her hand brushing his shoulder.

“Anything?” she whispered.
