The air in this place, if it could even be called air, was thick with the stench of despair, a cloying perfume of regret that clung to my lungs like a shroud. Each breath was a struggle, a constant reminder of the hell I was trapped within. I’d fought through circles of fire, of ice, of endless, gnawing hunger. I’d faced down beasts born of nightmares and men twisted into parodies of their former selves. Yet, here I was, still standing, still fighting. The Wheel of Torment had thrown everything it had at me, and I had, somehow, endured. But the cost was etched into my very soul.
It was in the quiet hum of this current space, a place that felt less like a distinct circle and more like the interstitial spaces between them, that I found her. Elara. Or what was left of her. She flickered at the edge of my vision, a ghost of a woman made of sorrow and fading light. I’d seen her before, a fleeting glimpse, a whisper of a name. Now, she solidified, her form coalescing from the ambient gloom. Her eyes, once I could finally meet them, were pools of infinite sadness, reflecting a pain that dwarfed even my own.
"Lycar," she breathed, her voice a fragile chime that seemed to shatter the oppressive silence. It was the first time she’d spoken my name, the first time she’d acknowledged me directly.
