The desert sun beat down on my back like a blacksmith’s hammer, each ray a searing blow against my leather armor. Sweat trickled down my temples, stinging my eyes, but I barely registered the discomfort. My focus was on the glint of metal unearthed from the shifting sands, a promise of both treasure and, perhaps, trouble. My gut, a finely tuned instrument honed by countless skirmishes and close calls, churned with an unease that had nothing to do with the heat. It whispered of something ancient, something wrong.
