“You said she was… excited about something,” I prompted, my voice low. The silence in the loft always felt amplified, each tick of the antique grandfather clock in the corner a hammer blow against the stillness. “Something about a new project?”

Chloe wrung her hands, her gaze fixed on the intricate patterns of the polished concrete. “Yes, she was. A big one. She’d been working on it for months, in secret. She said it was going to change everything for her.”
