Now, Chapter 20, “The Casebook Closes,” needed its story.
Sarah Jenkins. The name still echoed with a hollow finality. August 1st, 2026. The Westend loft, a space that had pulsed with creativity, now a silent testament to a brutal end. Blunt force trauma. No forced entry. The initial tableau was stark, almost too clean, as if the killer had meticulously erased their own presence.
I’d walked those polished floors, the silence amplifying my own footsteps, the vibrant canvases on the walls mocking the stillness of their creator. Elias Thorne, with his practiced charm and the subtle glint of ambition in his eyes, had been a knot in the investigation from the start. His alibi, a carefully constructed fortress of social engagements and digital footprints, had initially seemed impenetrable. But behind the polished veneer, I’d sensed a tremor of something else, a carefully suppressed resentment that Sarah’s vibrant spirit had somehow ignited.
