Sunlight, usually a cheerful visitor, seemed to struggle to penetrate the high, north-facing windows, casting long, dramatic shadows that danced with the dust motes. Thorne, ever the picture of polished composure, offered me a seat on a pristine, cream-colored sofa. The gesture felt almost like an insult, a stark contrast to the chaos and violence that had unfolded just a few miles away in Sarah Jenkins’ loft.
“Detective Cooper,” he began, his voice smooth as polished marble, “I’m still so shocked by the news. Sarah… she was such a vibrant soul.”
I settled onto the sofa, acutely aware of the silence that followed his words. It wasn’t a comfortable silence; it was the kind that stretched and strained, a vacuum waiting to be filled with something less palatable than platitudes. “Vibrant, yes,” I echoed, my gaze sweeping over the canvases leaning against the walls, each one a testament to Thorne’s undeniable talent. “And you said you hadn’t seen her in… what was it? A week?”
