The air in the cabin had grown thick, not just with the scent of pine and woodsmoke, but with an unspoken tension that had settled between Elara and Kael. Elara found herself watching him, her gaze snagging on the sharp planes of his face, the way his eyes, so often pools of midnight, seemed to hold a distant, ancient sorrow. “It’s not just the cold that keeps people away,” Kael had said, his voice a low resonance that seemed to vibrate in Elara’s bones. He was mending a split in the wooden frame of a window, his movements economical and precise. “There are things in these woods that have no place in the sun.”
Elara shivered, though the hearth crackled merrily. “Like the Wendigo?” she’d asked, her voice barely a whisper. The word felt like a stone in her mouth.
