Chapter 16
The Ancient Ritual
To break or control the curse, an ancient ritual is necessary. It requires a dangerous bond between Elara and Kael, pushing their relationship to its absolute limit.
The air in the cabin had grown thick, heavy with unspoken words and the scent of damp earth clinging to Kael’s skin. Elara watched him, her own breath catching in her throat, as he traced patterns on the rough-hewn table with a calloused finger. The firelight danced in his eyes, a wild, untamed thing that mirrored the storm brewing within her. She knew, with a certainty that settled deep in her bones, that they stood on the precipice of something ancient and terrible, something that would either bind them irrevocably or tear them apart.
“The old ways,” Kael began, his voice a low rumble that vibrated against the silence, “they speak of a balancing. A ritual to appease the hunger, to rein in the beast.” He looked up then, his gaze pinning her, and the intensity in it was almost unbearable. “But it is not a gentle thing, Elara. It demands a price.”
Elara swallowed, her throat suddenly dry. She had felt the shift in him, the subtle tightening of his jaw, the way his pupils seemed to dilate, swallowing the light. This was not merely a conversation; it was a confession, a prelude to a choice that would irrevocably alter the course of their lives. “What kind of price?” she managed, her voice barely a whisper.
