Chapter 11
The Wendigo's Lair
Kael takes Elara to his hidden lair, a place reflecting his ancient, wild nature. It's a test of her courage and her commitment, a glimpse into the heart of the beast.
The air in Kael’s cabin was thick with the scent of pine and something else, something primal and ancient that Elara couldn’t quite place. It clung to the rough-hewn logs, seeped from the furs strewn across the floor, and settled deep in her lungs. It was a smell that spoke of damp earth, of decaying leaves, and of a predator’s patient wait. Not an unpleasant smell, precisely, but one that vibrated with a raw, untamed energy that both thrilled and terrified her.
Kael had led her here, not with words, but with a gesture, a tilt of his head, an unspoken invitation that had felt more compelling than any command. The path had been barely there, a whisper of disturbed undergrowth, a subtle parting of branches that only Kael seemed to see. He moved with a fluid grace, his dark eyes, which held the depths of a shadowed forest, constantly scanning, assessing. Elara followed, her own senses heightened, her heart a hummingbird trapped in her chest.
This place, his lair, was more than just a cabin. It was a sanctuary carved from the wild, a testament to his solitary existence. The main room was dominated by a massive hearth, where embers pulsed with a low, hypnotic glow. Tools of a forgotten craft lay scattered on a workbench – bone needles, sinew thread, intricately carved wooden totems that seemed to watch her with vacant eyes. Shelves lined the walls, laden with jars filled with dried herbs, strange roots, and what looked disturbingly like preserved animal parts. A large, rough table sat in the center, scarred with the marks of countless meals, of countless solitary nights.
