The air in the cramped back room of the campaign office hung thick with the scent of stale coffee and desperation. Outside, the cicadas buzzed their monotonous song, a soundtrack to the suffocating heat of the Benin afternoon. Inside, the fluorescent lights hummed a discordant tune, reflecting off the anxious faces gathered around a scarred wooden table. Tolok traced the grain of the wood with a fingertip, his gaze distant, his mind a battlefield.

“We need the funds, Tolok,” Anya’s voice was a low, urgent rasp, cutting through the heavy silence. “The billboards are up in the south, the radio spots are scheduled, but without the next tranche… it all collapses.” She gestured towards a stack of invoices, their stark white a stark contrast to the muted desperation in the room. “This is not a negotiation. This is survival.”

Tolok met her gaze, the fatigue etched around his eyes a testament to months of relentless struggle. He knew what she was implying, and the implication tasted like ash. “And the source of these funds, Anya? Have we vetted it thoroughly?”
