The air in the makeshift campaign office, a repurposed storage unit smelling faintly of stale optimism and dust, crackled with a tension far thicker than the usual pre-election jitters. Outside, the humid Benin night offered little respite, its oppressive embrace mirroring the suffocating pressure that had descended upon Tolok and his burgeoning movement. For weeks, it had been a relentless tide, a calculated deluge of attacks designed not to defeat, but to drown him.
"They’ve frozen the accounts, Tolok," Anya announced, her voice tight, her usual composure frayed at the edges. She slid a sheaf of papers across the scarred table, the official-looking documents a stark contrast to their surroundings. "The central bank cited 'irregularities in funding protocols.' It's a fabrication. You know it, I know it."
Tolok’s gaze, usually alight with purpose, was clouded with weariness. He ran a hand through his hair, the gesture a familiar sign of his internal struggle. "Irregularities. Of course. It’s the language they speak, isn't it? The language of obstruction." He picked up a newspaper, its headlines screaming accusations that felt like physical blows. "And this… 'Tolok’s Hidden Foreign Patrons Revealed: A Threat to National Sovereignty'." He tossed it back onto the table. "My patrons are the people of Benin, Anya. The ones they’ve ignored for decades. The ones they’re trying to silence through me."
