The humid air of Cotonou clung to Tolok like a second skin, a constant, heavy reminder of his return. It was a familiar weight, yet tonight, it felt different, thicker, laced with a subtle poison he was only just beginning to detect. He sat in the dimly lit office of his burgeoning movement, the air thick with the scent of old paper and the faint, metallic tang of anxiety. Outside, the pulse of the city beat a restless rhythm, a symphony of distant horns and the murmur of unseen lives.

Anya’s voice, usually a bright, clear bell, was now a hushed whisper, devoid of its usual warmth. “The meeting with the northern delegation… it was moved. Without informing us.” She fiddled with a stray pen, her gaze fixed on a point beyond Tolok’s shoulder. The tremor in her hand was almost imperceptible, but to Tolok, it was a seismic shift.

He leaned forward, his own voice a low rumble. “Moved? To where? And who moved it?” He had poured weeks into securing that meeting, believing it was a crucial step towards solidifying support in a region notoriously resistant to outsiders.
