The air in the lower districts always tasted of iron and desperation, a stark contrast to the perfumed, filtered breezes that drifted through the gilded upper sectors. It was a taste I’d only ever experienced in fleeting, forbidden excursions, usually fueled by a gnawing curiosity that my father’s pronouncements on propriety could never quite quell. Today, however, the journey was not of my own clandestine making. It was a guided tour, courtesy of Ren, whose usual sharp wit had been softened by a weariness that seemed to cling to them like the ever-present dust.

“Don’t let the grime fool you, Kaiye,” Ren had said, their voice a low murmur as we navigated a narrow alleyway, the towering, soot-stained buildings pressing in on either side. “This is where the real magic happens. The kind that keeps the lights on in your fancy towers.”

I’d followed, my silk tunic feeling absurdly out of place against the rough cobblestones. My father would have had a fit if he knew I was here, consorting with someone from… *this* part of the city. But the thought of my father’s pursed lips and the inevitable lecture on lineage and duty felt less like a threat and more like a distant echo now. Ren’s presence, their matter-of-fact way of pointing out the world beyond my sheltered existence, was far more immediate.
