The air in the valley hummed with a quiet vitality, a stark contrast to the stifling formality of my former life. Sunlight, dappled and warm, filtered through the canopy of ancient trees, painting shifting patterns on the moss-covered earth. This was not a place of grand pronouncements or rigid adherence to lineage. This was a place of being. My hands, once accustomed to the delicate manipulation of arcane energies dictated by my father’s lineage, now worked with a different kind of magic. I was coaxing life from the soil, tending to the vibrant blooms that seemed to draw their color from the very heart of the earth.

It had been a year since I’d walked away from the gilded cage, since I’d traded the weight of expectation for the lightness of truth. The journey hadn’t been easy. The initial shockwaves from my departure had rippled through my family, a tempest of anger and disappointment that had threatened to drown me. Lord Valerius, my father, had been a storm unto himself, his pride wounded, his carefully constructed world crumbling around him. I’d seen the flicker of fear in his eyes, the terror of a man who believed he was leading his son to ruin, when in truth, I was finally leading myself to life.

Ren, bless their pragmatic heart, had been my anchor in those turbulent early days. They’d found me, a bewildered exile on the outskirts of the valley, their usual cynicism softened by a surprising flicker of concern. “So,” they’d said, leaning against a gnarled oak, their arms crossed, “you’re the heir who decided to trade his inheritance for… dirt?”
