The air in Master Lyra's study felt thick with unspoken anxieties, a palpable tension that clung to the velvet drapes and the ancient, leather-bound tomes. Elara traced the intricate patterns on the heavy oak table, her fingers seeking the familiar smoothness that usually soothed her. But today, even the solid wood offered little comfort. The dream, the one that had become a nightly torment, had been particularly vivid. She’d seen a single, incandescent thread, shimmering with the light of a thousand suns, begin to fray at its edges. Then, a chilling darkness, like spilled ink on silk, had begun to creep inwards, consuming the light. She had reached for it, her spectral hands desperate to mend the tear, but the thread had slipped through her fingers, dissolving into nothingness.
Master Lyra sat opposite her, her gaze steady, her face etched with a sorrow that seemed as old as the stars themselves. She had seen the distress in Elara's eyes, the unconscious clenching of her fists. "The dream," Lyra stated, her voice a low murmur, "it grows stronger."
Elara nodded, her throat tight. "It felt… realer than ever. The thread, Master Lyra, it was so beautiful, so full of life. And then… it was gone."
