The air in Elara’s small apartment, usually so comforting with its scent of aged paper and dried lavender, felt thick and unsettled. It was the kind of stillness that precedes a storm, a prickling sensation on her skin that had nothing to do with the weather. Her dreams, a constant companion of late, had become more vivid, more insistent. The celestial loom, its threads shimmering with an otherworldly light, was no longer a distant vision but a place she felt she could almost touch, almost *hear*. And in the periphery of those luminous visions, a shadow flickered, a void that seemed to absorb the light.
She’d dismissed it, at first, as the lingering effects of stress, the anxiety of a life that felt perpetually on the cusp of something, yet never quite arriving. But the subtle disturbances in her waking hours were harder to ignore. A teacup, perched precariously on the edge of her desk, had inexplicably toppled, shattering on the floor with a noise far louder than its size suggested. A book, one she’d been reading for weeks, had suddenly felt… wrong. The words, familiar and comforting just moments before, seemed to twist and rearrange themselves, forming nonsensical patterns that made her head ache. Then there was the growing unease that settled over the city, a palpable shift in the collective mood, like a collective sigh of apprehension.
Kael, ever the pragmatist, had noticed it too. He’d come over for their usual Friday night movie, but the usual easy banter had been replaced by a shared quietude. He’d found her staring out the window, a frown etched between her brows.
