The air in the Whispering Woods grew heavy, thick with an unnatural stillness that pressed against Elara’s eardrums. It was a silence not of peace, but of absence, as if the very birds had forgotten how to sing, and the wind held its breath. Lyra walked beside her, her movements as fluid and deliberate as a dancer’s, her gaze sharp, missing nothing. Kael, ever watchful, kept a slight distance, his hand resting near the hilt of the simple, unadorned dagger he always carried.

“It is here,” Lyra murmured, her voice barely disturbing the oppressive quiet. “The Unraveler’s touch is strongest in places where the threads have been most violently torn.”

Elara shivered, though the late afternoon sun still cast a weak, diffused light through the canopy. It wasn’t a chill of temperature, but a deep, visceral unease that settled in her bones. The trees here were different. Their bark seemed to writhe with a muted, greyish hue, and their branches, instead of reaching towards the sky, twisted inwards, as if in perpetual agony. Patches of ground were barren, devoid of even the hardiest moss, the earth appearing cracked and lifeless. It felt like a place that had been scoured clean, not by water or wind, but by something far more destructive.
