Threads of the Past
Elara’s hands moved with a practiced grace, the polished wood of her knitting needles a familiar comfort against her skin. The yarn, a deep, earthy moss green, flowed through her fingers, transforming into a complex cable pattern that twisted and turned like ancient vines. Outside the cottage window, the late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the meadow, painting the world in hues of gold and amber. A gentle breeze rustled the leaves of the oak tree by her door, and the distant bleating of sheep was a soothing counterpoint to the rhythmic click-clack of her needles.
She was working on a shawl for Mrs. Gable, the baker’s wife, a woman whose kindness was as warm as her oven. The pattern was a new one, inspired by the winding river that snaked through the valley, a pattern Elara had sketched out in her worn notebook just days before. It felt good to be lost in the creation, to let the familiar rhythm of her craft absorb the lingering disquiet that had settled over the village.
The incident at the market last week had been unsettling, more so than the villagers seemed willing to admit. Old Man Hemlock’s prized heirloom tomatoes, the ones he nurtured with such devotion, had been found smashed on the cobblestones, not a single one left intact. Then, the day before yesterday, the bell tower’s ancient bell, the one that had rung out for generations, had been found inexplicably muffled, its resonant clang reduced to a dull thud. And yesterday, it was the disappearance of the seamstress’s favourite silver thimble, vanished from her sewing basket as if spirited away by unseen hands.
