Chapter 8
A New Tapestry
Elara sat before the great loom, the afternoon sun casting long, dancing shadows across the attic floor. Dust motes, like tiny, golden sprites, swirled in the light, lending an ethereal glow to the unfinished tapestry. It was a breathtaking thing, even in its incompleteness. Rich, jewel-toned threads spilled from the wooden frame, a riot of colours that seemed to hum with a silent energy. Her grandmother’s hands, the Weaver’s hands, had worked these threads, and now they lay dormant, a puzzle waiting to be solved. Elara ran a finger over a patch of deep indigo, the surface surprisingly smooth, as if the dye itself held a softness. It felt like touching a memory, a tangible piece of the woman she barely knew but felt so deeply connected to.
She’d spent weeks now in this quiet, forgotten room, drawn by an invisible thread, a pull she couldn’t explain. The whispers of her past, once unsettling and vague, had begun to coalesce around this very loom. It was here, amidst the scent of aged wood and dried herbs, that the fragmented visions had started. Fleeting images, like dreams at the edge of waking, would flicker behind her eyes as she traced the intricate patterns. A woman’s face, her grandmother’s, smiling with a gentle wisdom. A glint of silver in a moonlit forest. The shimmer of protective wards woven into the very air.
Today, however, felt different. A quiet resolve had settled over her. The hesitant curiosity of the past weeks had bloomed into a determined purpose. She reached for the basket of threads beside her, her fingers brushing against a spool of shimmering silver. It felt cool, almost alive, beneath her touch. As she picked it up, a jolt, faint but distinct, ran up her arm. The tapestry seemed to sigh, a rustle of threads that Elara alone could hear.
