The air in Elara’s small cottage had grown thick, not just with the scent of dried herbs and woodsmoke, but with a palpable tension. Outside, the blight had begun its insidious creep, a stain of grey seeping into the vibrant greens of the forest fringe. Even now, looking out her window, Elara could see the leaves on the ancient oak, the one that marked the village’s western boundary, curling and fading like forgotten photographs. Inside her, a similar fading was occurring. The vibrant threads of her own memories, once so clear and sharp, felt dulled, their colors muted.

She ran a hand over the tapestry on her loom. It depicted the village festival of the previous summer – the riot of crimson from the elderberries, the sun-kissed gold of wheat sheaves, the joyous blue of the sky. But as she looked, the colors seemed to bleed, the laughter of the villagers a faint echo. This blight, she was beginning to understand, was not merely an external plague. It was a mirror, reflecting a growing darkness within her own heart, a darkness born from the very memories she had tried so desperately to weave away.

Old Man Hemlock, his face a roadmap of wrinkles, had spoken of the blight in hushed tones. He’d seen it before, he claimed, generations ago, a sickness that fed on despair. And he’d looked at Elara, his rheumy eyes holding a knowing glint, “Your gift, child,” he’d rasped, his voice like dry leaves skittering across stone, “it’s a powerful thing. But power, unchecked, can consume.”
