Elara sat by the window, the late afternoon sun casting long, golden fingers across the worn wooden floor. Outside, the wind rustled through the ancient oak trees, a familiar, comforting sound that usually soothed her. Today, however, it felt like a sigh, a gentle lament that echoed the ache in her own heart. She traced the smooth, cool surface of the wooden beads around her neck, each one a small, polished story. Her grandmother’s words, soft as a moth’s wing, came back to her: "These are not just beads, Elara. They are whispers of the women who came before you. They carry their courage, their hope, their peace."

Peace. That was a word Elara had always associated with her grandmother. Even when her hands trembled slightly as she stirred the soup, or when her breath grew shallow, there was a profound stillness about her. Elara had inherited the necklace after her grandmother’s passing, a gentle transfer of weight, of memory, of a legacy woven into the very wood of the beads. The village elder, a woman whose eyes held the wisdom of countless seasons, had placed it around Elara’s neck, her touch warm and steady. “It is a gift, child,” she’d said, her voice a low hum, “and a responsibility. It will guide you.”

And it had, in its own quiet way. When Elara felt a pang of loneliness, the familiar weight on her chest was a reminder that she was part of something larger, a tapestry of women connected by time and love. When doubt clouded her thoughts, the smooth, rounded shapes of the beads felt grounding, a tangible link to a strength she could almost taste. But lately, a different kind of shadow had fallen over Elara’s world, a sorrow that felt heavier than any she had known before. The laughter of children in the village square seemed distant, the songs of the birds a sad melody.
