Chapter 4
Grasping for Light
In her darkest hour, Elara clutches the familiar beads. Her grandmother's words echo, a faint but steady light, reminding her of the strength held within the necklace.
The world had turned a dull, muted grey. The vibrant colours Elara had always seen, the cheerful yellow of the sun, the deep green of the forest, the sky’s boundless blue, all seemed to have faded, leaving behind a landscape of shadows. Her heart felt like a heavy stone in her chest, dragging her down, down, down. The laughter of children playing in the village square, usually a melody that danced through her ears, now sounded distant and foreign, like sounds from another world she could no longer reach.
She sat by the window, her fingers tracing the cool, smooth surface of the wooden beads. Each one, worn smooth by the touch of countless hands before hers, felt like a familiar friend, a quiet presence in the overwhelming silence that had descended upon her home. Her grandmother, the sunniest, kindest woman Elara had ever known, was gone. The village elder had spoken gentle words of comfort, of peace, of a new journey, but Elara’s mind could only grasp the emptiness left behind. It was a void so vast, so deep, that she feared she might fall into it and never find her way out.
She remembered her grandmother’s hands, warm and wrinkled, carefully threading the beads onto the leather string. “These are not just beads, little one,” her grandmother had said, her voice a soft murmur, like the rustling of leaves. “They are whispers of all the women who have worn them. They hold our stories, our joys, and yes, even our sorrows. But most importantly, they hold our strength. The strength to face whatever life may bring.”
