Chapter 8
The First Strand
Elara's childhood is filled with her grandmother's gentle wisdom. The necklace is a constant presence, its smooth beads a comfort during quiet moments and shared stories.
The scent of dried lavender and warm bread always clung to Grandma Anya's small cottage, a comforting hug that Elara felt the moment she stepped through the door. Sunlight, softened by lace curtains, spilled onto the worn rug where Grandma Anya sat, her fingers busy with knitting needles that clicked a gentle rhythm. And always, always, around Grandma Anya’s neck, or nestled in Elara’s own small hands, was the wooden beaded necklace.
Elara traced the smooth, dark wood of a bead with her thumb. Each one felt different, some round and plump, others a little oval, worn smooth by years and years of touch. They weren’t just beads; they were whispers from the past, Grandma Anya had told her. "Each one holds a story, little sprout," she’d say, her voice like the rustle of dry leaves. "A prayer, a memory, a piece of our family’s heart."
Today, Grandma Anya was telling Elara about the very first bead, the one closest to the clasp. "This one," she’d explained, her eyes twinkling, "was carved by your great-great-grandfather. He was a carpenter, strong and kind. He made it when he first fell in love with your great-great-grandmother. He said it was to remind him of her gentle smile, even when he worked long hours in his shop."
