The scent of dried lavender and something else, something sweet and faintly spicy, wafted from the tiny, pressed flower clutched in Elara’s hand. It was so delicate, its petals like faded whispers of a summer’s day, and it lay nestled beside the small, sepia-toned photograph of a woman Elara didn’t recognize. Grandma Anya’s fingers, gnarled but gentle, traced the outline of the flower. “This,” she said, her voice soft as a moth’s wing, “is a forget-me-not.”

Elara tilted her head, her brow furrowed. “A forget-me-not? Why?” She looked from the flower to the wooden beads of the necklace, which now seemed to hold an even deeper mystery. Each bead, smooth and worn by time, had felt like a story before, but now, with this tiny bloom and this hidden picture, the stories felt more alive, more real.

Grandma Anya smiled, a slow, knowing smile that crinkled the corners of her eyes. “There was a time, long ago, when our family faced a great hardship. The fields were barren, the winter was long and fierce, and many people felt their hope dwindling like a candle flame in a strong wind.” She paused, her gaze drifting towards the window, as if seeing those distant days. “My own grandmother, your great-great-grandmother, she was a woman of immense spirit. Even when it seemed there was no food, no warmth, no reason to believe, she would go out into the snow and search for the smallest signs of life. And one day, she found it.”
