The stale air of Alex’s apartment did little to settle the storm brewing within him. Each breath felt like an inhalation of dust and regret. Miller sat across from him, a stark contrast to the disarray of his living space, her presence a sharp, clean line in the murky chaos. The files spread between them were a testament to their shared, obsessive pursuit. Thorne. The name itself was a bitter taste on Alex’s tongue.
“It’s all here, isn’t it?” Miller’s voice was low, devoid of its usual clipped authority, a rare vulnerability creeping in. She gestured to a financial ledger, its pages filled with a labyrinth of transactions, shell corporations, and offshore accounts. “The money trail. It leads right back to him.”
Alex’s gaze was fixed on a photograph tucked into the corner of one of the files. Sarah. Her smile, forever frozen, was a cruel mockery of his current reality. He remembered her laughter, the easy camaraderie, the way she’d always managed to find a sliver of humor even in the darkest of situations. She’d been the first to notice something was off, he now realized. Her hushed conversations with him, dismissed as pre-mission jitters, had been something far more significant.
