FBI Agent Miller is assigned to the case, initially viewing Alex with suspicion. Her investigation into the ambush uncovers inconsistencies, and she begins to notice Alex's own quiet, determined pursuit of the truth.
The sterile scent of antiseptic and stale coffee hung heavy in the air of the FBI field office, a stark contrast to the dust and cordite that still clung to Alex Thorne’s memory. Agent Miller, a woman whose sharp eyes missed nothing, watched him from behind a desk piled with manila folders. Her gaze, cool and appraising, felt like another interrogation, another attempt to dissect him. He’d been through enough of those in the past few months, each one leaving him feeling more exposed, more hollowed out.
"Mr. Thorne," Agent Miller began, her voice smooth but with an edge of steel, "we appreciate you coming in. Again." The emphasis on 'again' was subtle, but Alex heard it. He was a persistent ghost, a loose end they couldn't quite tie up.
"You asked me here, Agent," Alex replied, his voice a low rumble. He kept his gaze steady, refusing to flinch under her scrutiny. He’d learned that much in his years of service – control your posture, control your expression. It was a skill that now felt more like a cage.
