The air in Commander Thorne’s opulent study was thick with the scent of aged leather and regret. Alex Thorne, or John as he’d insisted on being called, stood across the polished mahogany desk, his gaze unwavering. The carefully constructed facade of the decorated officer had finally cracked, revealing the rot beneath. Thorne’s hands, usually steady, trembled slightly as he gestured towards a framed photograph on his desk – a younger, smiling version of himself surrounded by eager recruits.

“It was… a regrettable necessity, John,” Thorne began, his voice a low, strained murmur. The charm that had once disarmed so many now grated like sandpaper against Alex’s raw nerves. “The mission parameters… they shifted. Unforeseen circumstances.”

Alex let out a short, humorless laugh. “Unforeseen circumstances? You call an ambush, a massacre, unforeseen circumstances? My unit, Commander. My brothers. They were sacrificed. For what?”
