Alex and Miller share their findings, solidifying their trust. They agree on a dangerous plan to lure Thorne into a confession, using the evidence they've gathered as bait.
The air in the sterile interrogation room seemed to thicken with unspoken truths. Alex sat across the table from Agent Miller, the harsh fluorescent lights casting sharp angles on their faces. He’d expected suspicion, perhaps even outright hostility. Instead, he found a weary determination in her eyes, a mirror of his own. He’d laid out the fragmented pieces of his recovered memories, the inconsistencies in the official report, the chilling implications of Sarah’s last coded message. Miller, in turn, had shared her own findings – the redacted mission logs, the unusual financial transfers linked to Commander Thorne’s accounts, the quiet disappearance of a logistics officer who had been assigned to their unit just before deployment.
"It doesn't add up, Thorne," Miller said, her voice low, a stark contrast to the clipped, official tone he'd heard from her before. "The timeline, the equipment discrepancies, the sheer… finality of it all. It felt too clean."
Alex nodded, the phantom ache in his shoulder a familiar companion. "They wanted us gone. Not just the mission to fail, but us. All of us." He looked at his hands, calloused and scarred, hands that had once wielded weapons with deadly precision, now fumbling with the coffee cup Miller had pushed towards him. "Sarah… she knew something. I can feel it. That package she sent… it’s the key."
