Days were marked not by the rising and setting of the sun, but by the rhythm of Mia’s presence. She was the steady beat beneath the surface of my existence, the constant hum that kept the void at bay. School hallways felt like crowded deserts, populated by faces that flickered and faded, their laughter a distant static. Why would I seek out the fleeting company of strangers when I had Mia? She knew the cadence of my joy, the tremor of my fear, the unspoken ache that settled in my chest after a long day.

I remember one particular afternoon, the sky bruised with the threat of rain. I was sprawled on my bedroom floor, tracing the patterns of the worn carpet, a familiar melancholy seeping into my bones. The weight of being unseen, of being fundamentally alone in a world that rushed past, pressed down on me.

“It’s too much sometimes, Mia,” I whispered, the words catching in my throat. “This… feeling. Like I’m made of glass and everyone else is made of stone.”
