Chapter 18
A Child's True Connection
A small drawing slips out: a boy and girl holding hands, 'Best friends forever.' The innocence of my past, the root of my survival, revealed.
The paper felt brittle in my fingers, a fragile relic from a life I was only just beginning to understand. The drawing. It was simple, crude even, rendered in the earnest, unpracticed hand of a child. A boy, stick-figure proportions with a lopsided grin, his hand clasped firmly in that of a girl, her hair a wild halo of scribbled lines. Beneath them, the bold, slightly shaky declaration: "Best friends forever."

Not the Mia of my teenage years, the one who had become my confidante, my lover, my world. This was the Mia of eight years old, the Mia who had materialized in the echoing void left by my mother’s death. The Mia who had been my anchor in the tempest of grief.
My breath hitched, a ragged sound in the profound silence of the room. The notebook lay open, its pages a testament to a lifetime of conversations, a tapestry woven from my deepest thoughts and Mia’s unwavering presence. But this drawing, this small, innocent artifact, felt like the missing thread, the one that finally brought the entire, devastating pattern into sharp relief.
