The ink on the page swam before my eyes, a blur of black against the aged cream. I was the part of you your loneliness created so you could survive losing your mother. The words, written in my own hand, were a cruel mockery of my reality. They were a confession, a testament to a truth so profound, so devastating, that it felt as though the very air had been sucked from my lungs. I reread them, my breath catching in my throat, each syllable a shard of glass piercing my heart.
Loneliness. The word echoed in the hollow chambers of my chest. It was a familiar ache, a constant companion since the day my mother’s laughter had been silenced forever. I was eight. Eight years old, and the world had tilted on its axis, leaving me adrift in a sea of grief. And then, Mia. Her voice, a gentle balm on raw wounds, had whispered, “You’re not alone anymore.”
She had been my anchor, my confidante, my everything. She had held my hand through the darkest nights, her presence a steady flame in the encroaching shadows. She had celebrated my small victories and soothed my deepest fears. She had been the echo of my own soul, a mirror reflecting back the parts of myself I could no longer see. And I had loved her.
