The air in this place tasted like forgotten dreams and dust motes dancing in the slivers of light that dared to trespass. It was a far cry from the champagne-scented haze of my former life, a life that now felt like a phantom limb, an ache I could still recall but never quite touch. The artifact, that obsidian shard pulsing with a faint, internal luminescence, lay before me on a slab of what felt like petrified moonlight. Silas, his face a mask of ancient weariness that belied the predatory glint in his eyes, watched me from across the cavernous space. He hadn't moved in hours, a statue carved from shadow and secrets.
"The choice is yours, Victor," Silas's voice, a low rumble that seemed to vibrate through the very stone, echoed in the oppressive silence. "The path of restoration, or the path of… transformation."
Transformation. The word hung in the air, heavy with implications I was only beginning to grasp. I had come here, to this hidden pocket of reality that defied the logic of my old world, because Silas had promised me a chance to undo my mistake. The artifact, he’d explained, was a nexus, a conduit, capable of weaving the threads of fate anew. But the cost, always the cost. My initial wish, a desperate grab for more, for permanence, had shattered my life like fragile glass. It had brought me to this desolate place, hunted by the consequences and by Silas himself, a man who seemed to know the artifact’s dark heart better than I knew my own.
