The air in my penthouse, once thick with the scent of expensive cologne and victory, now carried a faint, metallic tang. A subtle shift, almost imperceptible, like the tremor before an earthquake. I’d been so caught up in the intoxicating rush of my wish, the sheer, unadulterated *power* of it, that I’d dismissed the prickling sensation on my skin as mere euphoria. Now, it felt like a thousand tiny eyes watching, a cold breath on the back of my neck.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, the city lights a glittering, indifferent sea below. My reflection stared back, the familiar sharp angles of my face softened by the dim light, the dark blue circles of my sunglasses a permanent shield against the glare of the world, or perhaps, against myself. I’d thought I had it all, and for a time, I did. The envy of men, the desire of women, the respect of those who mattered. Victor, the golden boy of the VIP scene, untouchable, unstoppable. Until I wasn’t.

The artifact. It sat on a velvet cushion in my study, a thing of unsettling beauty. Not gold, not silver, but a material that seemed to drink the light, its surface etched with symbols that writhed and shifted if you stared too long. It had whispered promises, and I, in my arrogance, had believed them. The wish had been simple, almost mundane in its desire for more. Not for wealth, I already had that. Not for power, I wielded it daily. It was for… permanence. For a guarantee that this life, this glorious, effortless existence, would never fade.
