The cool, damp air of the cellar still clung to them, even after they’d ascended the creaking steps and returned to the sunlit, dusty main hall of Silverwood. Eleanor’s letter, now crumpled and tear-stained, lay on the worn oak table between them, a fragile testament to decades of unspoken pain. Olivia stared at it, her executive composure shattered, her usually sharp gaze unfocused. Liam, typically prone to volatile outbursts, was eerily still, his artist’s hands clasped tight, knuckles white. The sun, slanting through the grimy windows, illuminated motes of dust dancing in the air, each particle a silent witness to the seismic shift that had just occurred.
“She… she knew,” Olivia finally whispered, her voice raw, barely audible above the distant hum of cicadas. “She knew everything. All this time.”
Liam slowly lifted his head, his eyes, usually so expressive, now held a deep, bruised sorrow. “She said… she said she thought it was for the best. To protect us.” His voice was rough, as if he hadn’t used it in days.
