The Richest Reward

The air in the village square buzzed with an electric anticipation, a tangible hum that vibrated through the packed earth and up into the soles of everyone’s feet. Lanterns, strung haphazardly between the ancient banyan trees, cast a warm, flickering glow, painting the faces of the assembled villagers in shifting hues of amber and gold. Arun, perched on the edge of the makeshift stage, felt a nervous tremor run through him, a sensation not unlike the one his stomach had experienced when a rogue gust of wind had once sent a whole sack of flour airborne, dusting him and half the marketplace in a ghostly white. He’d been practicing his juggling, a carefully orchestrated routine of three brightly colored balls, a trick he’d painstakingly honed in the quiet solitude of his family’s small courtyard. But tonight, under the expectant gaze of his entire community, those balls suddenly felt as heavy and unwieldy as stones.

Across the square, Ravi, with his practiced smirk and even more practiced pirouettes, was finishing his own performance. He’d juggled flaming torches, a feat that had elicited gasps and cheers in equal measure. Arun couldn't deny the man’s skill; Ravi moved with a fluid grace that Arun could only dream of. Ravi bowed, his chest puffed out with a confidence that Arun envied, and the applause was a thunderous wave that washed over the square. Arun’s heart sank a little. He knew Ravi was the favorite. He also knew his own best efforts had been… less than stellar.

His younger sibling, Meena, a small sprite with eyes that saw more than most, nudged his arm gently. "You'll do wonderfully, Arun," she whispered, her voice barely audible above the din. "Just remember what I told you."
