The air thrummed with anticipation. It was the day of the annual village festival, a riot of color and sound that had Arun’s heart doing a frantic drum solo against his ribs. He’d spent weeks, or more accurately, *tried* to spend weeks, preparing a grand performance. A juggling act, he’d envisioned, something so dazzling it would make his parents forget their worries, even just for a little while. But the juggling balls seemed to have a mind of their own, often finding their way into the nearest chicken coop or, on one memorable occasion, decorating the Village Elder’s prize-winning pumpkin with a sticky, orange smear.

He’d started with a simple rope act, hoping to impress with his agility. His younger sister, Meena, had watched from the doorway, her small face a mixture of concern and suppressed amusement as Arun’s feet tangled in the rope, sending him sprawling into a pile of hay, his limbs flailing like an overturned beetle. The chickens, ever the opportunistic audience, had erupted in a cacophony of clucking, as if applauding his dramatic descent. Arun, covered in straw and a fine dusting of chicken feathers, had managed a weak grin. “Just a little… interpretive dance, Meena,” he’d croaked, his voice muffled by the hay.

Meena, bless her perceptive soul, had simply picked a piece of straw from his ear. “It looked very… energetic, Arun.”
