The scent of damp earth and woodsmoke clung to Elara’s furs, a familiar, comforting smell that had replaced the cloying perfumes of court. She stood at the edge of the newly tilled field, the morning sun a pale, hesitant disk above the eastern hills, painting the furrows in shades of muted gold and deep umber.
