And Kaelen, with his easy smile and his whispered reassurances, had been the one to deliver the final blow. It wasn’t just the loss of the supplies, or the setback to our cause; it was the gnawing realization that someone we had trusted, someone who had marched alongside us, had been a viper in our midst.
I found myself drawn to the training grounds, the familiar scent of sweat and earth a strangely comforting balm. The clang of steel on steel, the grunts of exertion, the sharp crack of a well-aimed spell – these were sounds I understood, sounds that spoke of effort, of struggle, of a tangible push against the world. But today, even these familiar noises felt different. They were tinged with a new urgency, a desperate edge that mirrored the turmoil in my own heart.
Fayeleen found me there, leaning against the rough-hewn timber of the practice dummies, her presence a quiet anchor. Her elven eyes, usually so full of a gentle warmth, held a flicker of concern as she surveyed my grim expression. “Juanette?” Her voice was soft, a melody against the din of training.
