The air in the abandoned smithy hung thick with the scent of rust and old coal, a fitting aroma for our burgeoning rebellion. We huddled around a flickering oil lamp, its meager light casting long, dancing shadows that seemed to mimic the unease in our hearts. Outside, the wind howled like a banshee, a stark contrast to the nervous silence that had fallen over our little band. This was it. Our first real move. A test, a probe, a whisper of defiance against the roaring tyranny of my mother, Queen Fayette.

"Are we sure about this?" Garun's voice, usually a boisterous bellow, was a hushed rasp. He fiddled with the reeds of his lute, his fingers fumbling as if they were made of butter. His brother, Harmon, stood beside him, a stoic sentinel, his brow furrowed in concentration. Harmon was the magic, the force that would, if we were lucky, shield us from the worst of my mother's wrath.

Fayeleen, ever the picture of calm, met my gaze. Her elven eyes, usually alight with amusement, held a serious gleam. "We've been over the plan a dozen times, Juanette. It’s simple, it’s contained, and if it works, it will show us where she’s weakest." She squeezed my hand, her touch a silent reassurance that sent a tremor of warmth through me. Even in this grim setting, her presence was a beacon.
