And I, her daughter, was expected to be another gilded statue in her hall of tyranny.
But statues don't breathe, and I, Juanette Verian, breathed defiance. The whispers I’d heard in the shadowed corners of the palace, the furtive glances of those who dared to dream beyond the suffocating grip of my mother’s reign, had coalesced into a plan. Moonlight, usually a gentle caress, felt like a spotlight as I slipped through the servant’s passages, my heart a frantic drum against my ribs. Fayeleen was already there, a silhouette of grace against the overgrown rose bushes. Her elven ears, usually so sensitive, were pressed forward, listening. Her hand, when she reached for mine, was warm, a stark contrast to the icy air.
